Dysphagia
Dysphagia is a medical term for difficulty in swallowing. In the United States, it is estimated that 15 million adults suffer from dysphagia.
Dysphagia can be caused by a multitude of things, such as stroke, head/neck cancers, aging, and neurological disorders.
Consequences for dysphagia include malnutrition, dehydration, depression, anxiety, pneumonia, and even death. This is why people with dysphagia need to have options when it comes to their food and drink options to ensure they are following the safest diet possible.
The Dysphagia Levels can be seen in the International Dysphagia Diet Initiative Triangle. Each piece of the triangle gives information on what kinds of foods will be safest for a person to eat.
